Dry Needling at ARC Physiotherapy

Dry Needling at ARC Physiotherapy

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a specialised technique used by physiotherapists to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Unlike traditional acupuncture, which is based on Eastern medicine principles, dry needling is grounded in Western anatomical and neurophysiological concepts. During a dry needling session, thin, sterile needles are inserted into specific trigger points or tight bands within muscles, aiming to release tension, alleviate pain, and restore normal muscle function.

How Does Dry Needling Work?

The precise mechanism of dry needling is not fully understood, but it is believed to have several effects on the body’s nervous and musculoskeletal systems. By inserting needles into trigger points, which are hyperirritable spots within muscles associated with palpable nodules or taut bands, dry needling can help deactivate dysfunctional motor endplates, reduce muscle tension, and promote local blood flow and tissue healing. Additionally, the insertion of needles can stimulate the release of endogenous opioids and neurotransmitters, leading to pain relief and improved pain modulation.
